The Craft of Information Visualization: Readings and Reflections (Interactive Technologies)

The Craft of Information Visualization: Readings and Reflections (Interactive Technologies)
by: Benjamin B. Bederson, Ben Shneiderman

Editorial Review:

Information visualization is a rapidly growing field that has emerged from research in human-computer interaction, computer science, graphics, visual design, psychology, and business methods. It is becoming an increasingly critical component in scientific research, digital libraries, data mining, financial analysis, market studies, manufacturing production control, and drug discovery.
The Craft of Information Visualization: Readings and Reflections traces the evolution of ideas and innovations within a leading research lab. It collects for the first time 38 of the key papers from the University of Maryland's Human-Computer Interaction Lab (HCIL), a respected community that has shared many scientific and commercial successes. Each chapter contains an introduction written by the current director and the founding director of HCIL, describing the connections between these seminal papers and tracing their innovative histories.
*Presents key ideas, novel interfaces, and major applications of information visualization tools, embedded in inspirational prototypes.
*Techniques can be widely applied in scientific research, digital libraries, data mining, financial data analysis, business market studies, manufacturing production control, drug discovery, and genomic studies.
*Provides an "insider" view to the scientific process and evolution of innovation, as told by the researchers themselves.
*This work comes from the prominent and high profile University of Maryland's Human Computer Interaction Lab

I have met and attended many lectures by both Bens and believe they both have and still have many contributions to HCI. This book is not one of them, as I was suprised at the poor printing quality of this book. Many figures are unreadable, and make many references to the same project, (i.e. Spotfire)throughout many of the papers. The main reason for purchasing this book was to have one place to look for varied theories, methods or appliactions of information visualization. You may be better served by... more info
